During our Tuesday's class we again talked about digital literacy and digital citizenship. We touched on these two terms in a previous class, but we went into more depth during this class. Digital literacy is a fundamental aspect of your digital citizenship. Digital literacy is being able to use technology whereas digital citizenship is being able to your technology in the way that it was meant to be used. I think as educators it is very important that we are encouraging our students to be good digital citizens. Most of our students will already have good digital literacy knowledge before stepping into our classroom, but they may not think about how important being a positive digital citizen is.
On Thursday we had John Evans attend our class for a presentation. John works for MAPLE (Manitoba Professional Learning Environment). I was not familiar with the MAPLE website, but John went through some of the groups that we can subscribe to and I think this website will be a great resource in my future. The fact that this is a private website and that you have to be accepted in makes the website that much better. Knowing that the information on the website is from fellow Manitoba Teachers and not some random on the internet verifies that this information is valid. I think this is a great idea to have a website like this and I am glad that we had the opportunity to listen to John tell us about how we can use it.
I like that you pointed out the reliability of the content on MAPLE. That is definitely an area of concern when researching things online these days. I think MAPLE is a great resource because everything is curriculum-based. I think it is also a great way to stay connected with other educators in the province. The connections available to be made there are just as valuable, in my mind!
ReplyDeleteI like what you have said her about digital citizenship. I agree that we need to encourage our students to be good digital citizens. It seems like it is full expectation to have an online classroom set-up for each class that we have. This just seems like the best way to help build good citizen skills, especially since it can be monitored and shut down if it gets out of hand. It's going to be interesting to see over the years where the balance is going to lie in terms of supporting an online presence and real world experiences.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agreed about to be positive digital citizen because it can lead us better destination with use of digital literacy. After become the positive digital citizen, people can utilise their knowledge in right and proper way with the use of digital literacy. However, Digital literacy also important for implant the various tricks whereas needed. People should need the knowledge of digital literacy and citizen. If so, they can get information from the websites and can also access the internet in proper way. On the other hand, talked about technology likes websites and resources on the internet. I believed that use of the websites mentioned as MAPLE is good resource for educators. I would like to use in my placement that resource.
